Tips for keeping your home neat for holiday guests

18735751 - multi generation family celebrating thanksgiving

Are you entertaining guests in your home this holiday season? Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned pro, hosting guests always comes with a bit of stress. To me, one of the most important hostess duties if getting your home clean before guests arrive and keeping it that way through their stay. A clean home will not only make guests feel welcome, but it will also give you a sense of order and calm, even when your house is bursting at the seams with family and friends.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and the whole house needs to be cleaned, begin with the guest bedroom and bathroom. Start by decluttering the shelves and surfaces as much as you possibly can. Temporarily take away any personal knick knacks to create an inviting hotel vibe and give guests the room to set their things down.

Throw all of the guest room linens and towels into the laundry. If you need to buy new bed linens, towels and washrags for the occasion, go for white because you can always bleach them. Once the linens have been cleaned and the bed is remade, be sure to put out a variety of pillows and extra blankets.

Once you’ve decluttered and completed the laundry, it’s time to clean the guest bedroom and bathroom. Work from the top down wiping surfaces, dusting thoroughly and vacuuming the area. Now’s the time to also clean the ceiling fan and clean under the bed, too.

After you’ve cleaned the bathroom, outfit it with the essentials so your guests don’t have to ask. Leave a stack of towels, a washrag, extra toilet paper, cotton balls and ear swabs. If you really want to go the extra mile, include a small basket of travel-sized toiletries.

Help your guests keep their room clean by making space in the closet for their clothes and opening a folding stand for their luggage to sit on. If your guest is staying for more than a few days, put out a laundry basket for them and offer to run a load for them.

Once the guest room is in good condition, it’s time to tackle the common areas. After you’ve decluttered and cleaned, launder any upholstered furniture and blankets your guests might use.

Ensure the common areas of your home stay clean by organizing before guests arrive. Consider a basket for blankets, a magazine rack, and a charging station to keep all cords and plugs contained. At the end of every night, after your guests go to bed, take an extra five minutes to put everything from the remote control to the pillows back in their designated places so your guests wake up to a clean home.

5 holiday recipes we love

47436757 - roasted poultry, glasses with juice, vegetables, nuts and tableware on served table

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

One of my favorite things about the holidays is whipping up an extravagant feast for my family on Thanksgiving Day. From the turkey to the sweet potatoes, I find great joy in ushering in the holiday season with traditional family recipes. That being said, cooking the same dishes the same way year after year can get a little dull for you and your guests.

This year, put a fresh spin on classic holiday favorites with a few clever changes and substitutions. After all, Granny’s famous pecan pie could always use a modern reinvention!

Apple Pecan Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 1 9×9-inch pan of cornbread, cooled and crumbled
  • 8 oz. herb-seasoned dry bread stuffing mix
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cups chopped apples
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • 2 cups apple juice
  • 3 eggs, beaten

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 3-quart casserole dish.

In a large bowl, combine the cornbread, stuffing mix, parsley, ginger and salt. Mix in the celery and onion mixture, chopped apple, chopped pecans, apple juice and beaten eggs. Spoon dressing into prepared casserole dish.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until heated through, and lightly browned on top.

Butternut Squash Gratin

Ingredients:

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 ½ lbs butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 4-inch chunks
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 8 oz. shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 8 oz. shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbs chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 tbs chopped fresh rosemary
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onions and garlic; cook until the onions soften and turn golden brown, about 10 minutes. Add the butternut squash and brown sugar. Continue cooking and stirring until the butternut squash begins to brown on the edges, but is still somewhat firm in the center, about 10 minutes more. Scrape the squash into the prepared baking dish, and pour in the chicken broth. Wrap tightly with aluminum foil.

Bake in the preheated oven until the liquid has been absorbed and the squash is tender, 45 to 50 minutes. Toss together the Gruyere cheese, Cheddar cheese, bread crumbs, thyme, and rosemary in a bowl until evenly combined. Remove the foil from the baking dish, and sprinkle the squash evenly with the cheese mixture. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top. Return to the oven, and bake uncovered for 15 minutes more until the topping is lightly crunchy and brown.

Green Beans with Walnuts

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. fresh green beans, washed and trimmed
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tsp walnut oil
  • 2 tsp minced fresh parsley
  • Ground black pepper to taste
  • Salt to taste

Directions:

Place the walnuts on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees F for 5 to 8 minutes.

Cook beans in large pot of boiling salted water until just tender, about 5 minutes. Drain. Rinse beans with cold water, and drain well. Can be prepared 6 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature.

Melt butter or margarine with oil in heavy large skillet over high heat. Add beans and toss until heated through, about 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add walnuts and parsley and toss. Transfer to bowl and serve.

Ginger Pear Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients

  • 12 oz. fresh cranberries
  • 1 large pear, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 oz candied ginger, minced
  • 1 orange, zested
  • 1 whole star anise pod
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ tsp garam masala
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to boil, reduce heat to medium, and simmer, stirring occasionally, until cranberries have softened, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

Remove cinnamon stick and star anise. Chill until ready to serve.

Caramel Pecan Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust
  • 36 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup pecan halves

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a saucepan over low heat, combine caramels, butter and milk. Cook, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in the melted caramel mixture. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown. Allow to cool until filling is firm.

Happy cooking!

Building the perfect Thanksgiving tablescape

44237567 - autumn rustic table setting with berries, leaves, acorns and nuts

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving is already upon us. As you prepare your guest room for family and diligently plan your grocery list, don’t forget to arrange a tablescape to complement your beautiful Thanksgiving feast.

Overwhelmed at the thought of simply pulling out placemats? Don’t worry! This is my five-step, foolproof guide to crafting a unique tablescape that’s true to you and your family.

Style

The first thing to do is determine the style of your tablescape. Will it reflect the general style of your home, or will it be something completely different? For a traditional look, incorporate family heirlooms like fine china and silver. Go rustic with a cozy, worn-in look that’s reminiscent of the countryside. If you prefer a contemporary style, choose black and white table accessories with a minimal aesthetic. Fashion a glam table with metallic details and a bold color palette.

Color

Next, consider your color palette. It’s easy to get carried away when planning your tablescape, so choosing a color palette will ensure your arrangement looks consistent and well-planned. The options for a tablescape palette are endless. Jewel tones are a classic fall choice for a Thanksgiving tablescape. Not only are the colors rich and flattering in a number of dining rooms, but these colors are the perfect complement to Thanksgiving foods like sweet potatoes and green beans. Other stylish choices include the warm colors of the autumn landscape, or rich shades of red.

Placement

After you have a style and color scheme locked down, consider the placement of your tablescape. Lay down the essentials — plates, glasses, etc. — and then get creative with the placement of your decorative accessories. If you have a circular or square table, you’ll make a symmetrical arrangement of additional decor in the middle of the table. For a rectangular or oval-shaped dining table, any decorative arrangement should be long and relatively thin in order to proportionally fit the table. As you lay out your tablescape, ask yourself if you’ll be putting food directly on the table. If so, don’t go overboard with decorations! You want the table to look full, but not cluttered!

Dimension

Make your tablescape interesting by adding in a little dimension. If you’re stacking a charger with a dinner plate and maybe an appetizer plate on top, create dimension by mixing colors, textures and patterns. Try layering pattern on pattern, but make sure that the patterns have a similar scale and some shared colors. The most essential way to create dimension in your tablescape is with height. A well-planned tablescape incorporates different heights using tall florals and candlesticks for visual versatility.

Additions

Tablescapes are a freeform art that can be as complex or as simple as you like. If you’re a tablescape expert, go the extra mile this year with unique additions to your traditional table setting. Label each setting with a personalized place card to direct everyone to their seats. Lastly, add a little fun to your Thanksgiving feast by outfitting each place setting with a party popper — it’s the perfect post-dinner treat for adults and kids alike. You just might make a new tradition out of it!

How do you make your Thanksgiving tablescape stand out?

The benefits of sleeping on an adjustable mattress

49654381 - photo of young man sleeping on nice white bed. young man demonstrating quality of mattress

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

Are you riddled with aches and pains when you roll out of bed in the morning? For many people, a sore back and stiff neck are as much a part of their daily routine as that first cup of coffee. It’s easy to blame the pain on stress or age, but the real issue may lie with the mattress itself.

Instead of confronting a sub-par sleeping arrangement with a cohort of pillows and a new set of high thread count sheets, lay the foundation for a good night’s sleep by choosing a quality mattress. Home Zone Furniture offers a number of different mattress types to fit a wide variety of people.

In general, the best mattress is one that keeps your body in complete alignment from head to heels. Since everyone’s mattress needs are different depending on their body type, weight and a host of other variables, be sure to try all types of mattresses, from memory foam to innerspring and even adjustable mattresses.

Personally, I love adjustable mattresses and the many health benefits they offer. First and foremost, an adjustable mattress allows for ergonomically correct positioning of the body. Unlike traditional mattresses, adjustable mattresses cater specifically to the natural curvature of your spine, spreading the weight out evenly and adjusting to your changing needs over time.

By supporting the various pressure points throughout your body, an adjustable mattress can promote both a healthy posture and proper circulation. People with heart problems, breathing trouble and swollen legs and feet will appreciate the effects of an adjustable mattress, but everyone can benefit in some way from customizable support.

If you’re tired of an achy lower back being a regular part of your day, consider switching over to one of our many comfortable mattresses. Sweet dreams may be just within reach!
