What makes a home homey? Whether you’re planning on entertaining guests this spring or simply looking to make your home feel cozier, try putting a hospitable spin on each of the rooms in your house.
These tips and tricks will make your home welcoming, warm and comfortably beautiful with just a few simple adjustments.
A Pop of Greenery
Pantone’s color of the year is a bright, cheerful shade called Greenery. Whether your style is traditional, rustic or contemporary, adding some green houseplants or Greenery-hued accessories will bring some life into your home. With spring on the horizon, there’s no better time of the year to think about bringing the outdoors in!
Welcoming Scents
To have a hospitable home, it’s important to get rid of any off-putting smells and disperse welcoming, feel-good aromas. Regular sweeping, vacuuming, dusting and mopping will take care of the dirt, dust and dog hair. Instead of using air fresheners, however, try using essential oils such as lemon, geranium or bergamot to wipe down hard surfaces. Not only will these essential oils help clean your home, they’ll also put out a fresh, clean citrus smell and create a beautiful atmosphere.
Layered Rugs
Few things create a cozy environment more than rugs scattered throughout the home. In the formal living room or den, experiment with layering rugs with different colors and textures for a particularly inviting look. In order to keep the layering technique looking professional, always put the low pile rug on the bottom, and make sure there’s at least one common color or pattern between the two rugs. You can also place rugs in the entryway or layer them on top of a carpet in the bedroom.
Clear the Clutter
You should always clear your home of unnecessary clutter before guests arrive. Stacks of magazines, unorganized TV accoutrements and random knickknacks lying on various surfaces does not create a zen atmosphere. Clutter can accumulate in any room of the home, so try going systematically from room to room and see what you can either get rid of or reorganize.
Maximize Light
In my opinion, a hospitable home feels clean, light and bright. Once you’ve cleaned and cleared the clutter, invite light into the central rooms of your home. Start on a smaller scale by swapping out heavy curtains and window treatments with gauzy, white linen curtains. Lightweight curtains provide privacy and also let a nice amount of filtered sunshine inside.
Personal Touches
Last but not least, an inviting home always has the perfect amount of personal touches. From a curated wall of family photos to a mantle with meaningful, gathered mementos, your home should both look beautiful and tell a story.
