Summer is the season for outdoor living. From afternoons poolside to nights eating barbecue, my family’s favorite summer activities always occur right in our own backyard.
If your family shares the same seasonal traditions, make this summer the best one yet by taking your outdoor decor to the next level. From sophisticated seating to the perfect plants, these are my four tips to create a functional and stylish outdoor living space.
Why do we spend so much time outdoors in the summer? Of course, part of it is the balmy temperatures, but the other part is that everything is in full bloom. The first step to creating an alluring oasis in your backyard is committing to your greenery.
Go beyond the flower bed with seasonal blooms, and try lush, low-maintenance plants like vines and succulents. Use a combination of plants with different heights, and mix in a few potted plants here and there for a unique, dimensional result.
Create Flexible Spaces
You never know what kind of event might occur in your outdoor space, which is why it should be as flexible as possible. For everyday living, carve out one space for dining and one for socializing, if your space allows. When you set up both of these spaces, use furniture that could be easily moved so you can rearrange the structure whenever you want.
You also never know how many friends might join you. Always have extra folding chairs and cushions on hand for extra seating and comfort.
One of the most important things to do when creating an outdoor space is to maximize the use of every seat and surface. What you don’t want to do is end up with a backyard that’s cluttered with tables, chairs and other extraneous furniture.
When you place something in your yard, make sure it is truly useful. Instead of three chairs on one side of an outdoor dining table, try one long bench. In a slim space by the pool, swap out two single pool chairs for a double chaise. Both of these quick changes will give you the same amount of seating and only half the furniture.
Color and Pattern
Style doesn’t stop at the back door! Bring your style outdoors with a choice selection of colors and patterns. It’s always a good idea to focus on neutrals so your space doesn’t look too busy, but don’t be afraid of throwing in a pop of color. Colors that are inspired by the palette of your backyard make a great addition to seating, throw pillows and even pool towels. For a little extra color and personality, use beautiful ceramic tiles around your pool or grilling area to make space a true standout!
In your opinion, what sets an outdoor living space apart from the rest?
