It’s easy to get caught up in the hubbub of everyday life. Between taking the kids to school, making it to work on time and running errands, sometimes the tidiness of your house falls by the wayside. However, just as your days follow a steady rhythm, so should your cleaning. Keeping a neat home not only makes you feel organized and clear-headed, but you’ll also be prepared should an unexpected guest drop by. It’s by no means necessary to scrub the toilet or vacuum daily to maintain order. These 10 small actions can be incorporated into your routine to keep your home looking good between those deep cleanings!
Make the bed.
Start your day off on a productive note by making your bed. Your bed most likely takes up the majority of your bedroom, so by simply pulling up the sheets, fluffing the comforter and arranging the pillows, you’ll already have a more orderly room — one that you’ll look forward to coming back to every evening.
Clean up the bathroom.
While you’re getting ready in the morning, spot-clean the bathroom. As you shower, use a squeegee to remove soap scum before it builds up. Post shower, take a towel and wipe down the bathroom ceramics, including toilet, sink and tub. When you take these small daily actions, you’ll buy yourself some time between those dreaded bathroom cleanings.
Empty the dishwasher.
The dishwasher should be emptied every morning in anticipation of the day ahead. Throughout the day (and at dinnertime), make use of the empty dishwasher by rinsing dishes in the sink and filing them away. After all, nothing makes a kitchen feel dirtier than a sink brimming with dishes. So keep that dishwasher at the ready!
Start the laundry.
Another secret of keeping a clean house is nipping laundry in the bud. Start a load before you leave in the morning so you aren’t faced with a huge pile on the weekend.
Organize with baskets.
The last morning duty is picking up odds and ends and collecting them in a designated basket. From toys to misplaced chargers, gathering loose items in one place will eliminate the appearance of clutter and allow you to come home to a clean house.
When you get home from work, collect and sort the mail. Open all envelopes and throw out anything you don’t need. For everything you’re keeping, don’t leave it lying around. Place mail in a folder, bin, drawer — your choice, as long as it’s organized!
Put away laundry.
As soon as the laundry is washed and dried, tend to it immediately. Fold your clothing quickly so it doesn’t wrinkle, then put it away in your closet. I find that if you don’t get to your laundry as soon as possible, it ends up in a huge pile that you never end up putting away.
Clean the kitchen.
After dinner ends, resist the temptation to watch TV or get in bed. No one likes to wake up in the morning to find a messy kitchen, plus it will be easier to scrub pots, pans and plates before the food dries overnight. Don’t forget to start the dishwasher!
Sweep high-traffic areas.
It’s a good idea to at least sweep the high-traffic areas of your home at the end of the day. I suggest sweeping the kitchen, family room and entryway to keep your home feeling fresh. While you’re at it, wipe down high-traffic surfaces as well. The kitchen countertop, in particular, can get grimy if it isn’t tended to.
Collect trash from smaller receptacles, including bathrooms and home office, and dump them out along with the larger kitchen can. Taking out the trash more frequently will ensure you don’t smell the remains of last night’s dinner in the morning, plus you won’t attract bugs. Keep in mind, this is an easy chore to pass off to the kids!
