Bree’s top sleep tips

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

When someone asks, “How are you?” do you say, “Tired!” without even thinking? Are you always tired? Reaching for that cup of coffee at 7AM, 9AM, again after lunch and maybe another around 4PM?

Perhaps the problem isn’t about getting enough caffeine; it’s likely about the lack of quality of sleep you’re getting at night. Here are a few simple tips to improve your days by fortifying your nights.

Watch the clock.

Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, including weekends. This will help sleeping and waking happen more naturally and with less of a struggle.

Sleep like a baby.
As in, create rituals for yourself each night that tell your body that it’s time to sleep. Read a book, have a cup of decaf tea, dim the lights and shut down your computer. Your brain will quiet and it’ll be easier to hit the hay with a clear head.

Work it out.

Biologically speaking, working out is great for your sleep, as long as you don’t do it too close to bedtime. Squeeze in a workout as often as possible, and your sleep quality will surely benefit.

Ditch the power nap.

Napping during the day makes it harder to sleep at night. Power though and then follow the steps above to get into a better resting groove.

Comfort counts.

Your bedroom must be primed for the best sleep possible! Be sure you can get adequate darkness, that it’s quiet and that the temperature is somewhere between 60 and 67 degrees to keep you cool and comfortable all night long. And speaking of comfortable, your mattresspillows and other bedding materials should be allergen-free and soft yet supportive for a premium night’s sleep.

Let there be light.

Sleep isn’t just about darkness; it’s also about letting light in when it’s time to wake up. This light and dark helps regulate the body’s natural circadian rhythms.

Simmer down.

Certain things we do during the day pump us up. Eating, drinking, playing video games, texting, etc. Doing these things right before we go to bed goes against the cause. So stop it! An hour before bedtime, don’t eat, smoke or do any of those other things.

The “Two Things” rule.

Like I mentioned in the last post, the bedroom should be for two things and two things only: sleeping, and that other thing people do in bedrooms behind closed doors. That means, keep your cellphones put away and your TV out in the living room. You’ll be glad you did.

Remember: A better day starts with Zzzzzzzzzz.

Sweet dreams!

How to make a great first impression

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

They say eyes are the windows to the soul. Therefore, one might say windows are like the eyes to the home. So that makes your front door the mouth. And just like having a frown on your face creates a bad first impression, an unwelcoming porch makes for a bad first impression for someone entering your home.

Here are my best tips for creating the best possible impression, sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces.

Say “Welcome”

Quite literally, with a welcome mat! Folks want to know you’re open to company.

Put on a coat!

As in, a fresh coat of paint. The front door can pop in red, yellow, white, aqua or even rich black. Don’t be afraid to choose something bold.

Look alive!

The best way to freshen your walkway is with living plants, flowers and a lush lawn. Invest in professional lawn care or get your hands dirty at your local nursery, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Get seasonal.

Put a seasonal wreath on your door to add a festive tone to your home.

Take a number.

Details, details, details. Something as basic as your house numbers can make a huge impact when you replace them with an updated version. Get yourself to your local home improvement store and choose your favorite style!

Look down.

That first impression doesn’t end once you walk inside. Keep the good vibes going with a beautiful new rug underfoot. Tie the inside look to the freshness of the new-and-improved outside with a rug in a style that creates the perfect flow.

Look around.

Is there a bit too much clutter in your foyer? Nothing ruins that killer first impression faster than a bunch of extra junk once you step inside. Hide it all away with some new storage. You know where to find it…

Giving your guests a great first impression is easier than you think. Just a few simple steps and before you know it folks will be knocking on your door asking you how you did it!

Bree’s Bedroom Makeover Tips

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

Often, with an entire house to clean and beautify, the room in which you actually spend the most time ends up being the most neglected: your bedroom. Even though your eyes are closed most of the time you’re there, it’s where you log the most hours. And if the space is messy or unpleasing to you, it can actually affect you negatively throughout your day. Make over your bedroom and make over your mind!

Color!

Is your bedroom too neutral? Often we get caught up in what we should do and neglect what we want. What’s your favorite color? Add more of it! It doesn’t have to be splashed on all four walls, but do yourself a favor and make sure your bedroom speaks to YOU.

Refresh!

Obviously the bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom. After all, they don’t call it the “dresser room.” The bed is where you spend all those hours! Dress your bed like you dress yourself. Before you leave the house, make your bed. Studies show folks who make the bed each morning are more productive because they’ve accomplished that one simple task. So do it! And as for bedding, whether you like simple, frills, lots of pillows, colors, patterns or whatever, make it yours. And if you’re just over it? Change it! Remember, you sleep here every single night so it’s worth the investment.

Escape!

Give your bedroom a theme. No, not like when you were a kid and loved rainbows or trains. I’m talking about more grownup themes like “hotel room” and “tropical oasis.” Then, when you shop for new details like refreshed bedding and colors (see above), you’ll have a vision in mind. Head to inspiration websites such as Pinterest and Houzz to get ideas to guide you.

Go shopping!

Look around. If your furniture came with you from college, it may be time for an upgrade. Come visit us at Home Zone and see how we can make your bedroom dreams come true—on any budget. From dreamy upholstered sleigh beds to sleek, modern four posters to traditional carved bedroom sets, we have what you’re looking for.

Rearrange!

Sometimes you just need to change perspective and things can feel completely different. Imagine your bedroom as a blank slate and begin again! Break the rules; start by moving the bed to a completely different spot in the room and go from there. You’ll be amazed what a little change can do.

When you open your eyes in the morning, you should love what you see and be excited to take on the day. Up and at ’em!

How to create a space that’s just for you

Bree here, from Home Zone Furniture.

As a mother of four with a household and a business to run, you know I’m short on time and that prioritization is critical for me to maintain my sanity. Another thing in short supply around my house? Personal space. It’s less about the square footage of your home and more about the number of children and the way your home becomes all about them and less about you.

That’s why this post is all about how to create your own space at home, a place that’s just for Mom. One that allows you to take a break, be yourself and enjoy some “me time.” I call it the “Bree Spot,” but you can call yours the “Me Spot.”

Do you still remember who “you” are? Good. Let’s start there. Say you’re a…

Workout wonder woman (or want to be)
If you like to stretch or practice yoga, all you need is a corner area or larger to make your “Me Spot” happen. Lay a yoga mat facing a great view: either of a piece of art you love, a window or a blank wall so you can imagine whatever calms your mind. If aerobics, cycling or lifting weights is more your style, a bit more space is needed, and bright paint colors or motivational art will get you in the mood to sweat. Add the right music and suddenly you’re in your happy place.

Crafty Cathy
Be honest. Do you secretly call yourself “Martha”? Well, that famous crafter aside, every homemaker who likes to don an apron and knows how to create enviable radish roses, napkin swans and wrapping paper masterpieces needs her own space to do it. All it takes is a bit of creativity—maybe a bit of inner your “Martha”?—to find your own little craft haven. Do you have a spare linen closet? Think you could move some things around to make it so you do? If not, something as simple as a cabinet or armoire could be fashioned into a craft nook with a trip to your local hardware store.

Garden gnome?
Who says your “Me Spot” has to be indoors? A beautiful herb garden, koi pond, flowerbed, water feature or even just a simple bench to sit and read can provide all the peace and fulfillment you need. If you love to garden, section off a bit of yard and create your dream landscape. No yard? No problem! Vertical gardens are all the rage these days; just check out these Pinterest boards for great ideas to get you started. Do you have a brown thumb but still love the outdoors? A Zen garden might suit you just fine. Create a space you love, take a deep breath and relax.

Working warrior
Does work get you jazzed? There’s nothing wrong with that! But it’s hard to get work done with all the domestic distraction. So find a space that’s all yours and isolate yourself from those interruptions. Customize the space with office furniture you like and pictures of friends and family. Make sure your family knows that when Mom’s at work, she’s at work. So knock first, and wait to be let inside.

Once you’ve made your “Me Spot” your own, it can become your haven. Take your time personalizing it and building a space that’s truly special to you. The more it feels like home, the better you’ll feel inside.

Enjoy!
