5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Sofa

5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Sofa By Home Zone Furniture

How often do you buy new furniture? Do you switch out your couches, tables and chairs with the seasons or your moods, or do you wait until your existing furniture just cannot fulfill its intended function for one more day before you replace it?

The ideal frequency is probably somewhere in between. Luckily, you don’t have to guess — there are clear signs that it’s time for a new sofa

Your Sofa Begins to Creak

If your couch produces squeaking or creaking sounds when you sit down, it’s probably time to look for a replacement. These noises are one sign that a sofa has structural damage. The creaking could mean that there is a problem with the joints on a metal or wood frame, or it could mean that one or more of the metal springs have weakened. Many pieces of older furniture were constructed using hardwoods and screws; even some newer products are put together with manufactured staples, woods and epoxies. Problems with any of these components could cause telltale creaking.

Unless your sofa is a cherished family heirloom or unusually valuable, you’re usually better off replacing it than trying to repair it. The cost of repairing structural damage to couches or replacing upholstery can be nearly as high as buying a new piece. You will want to replace your sofa sooner rather than later in this case because this type of damage will only worsen over time.

Your Upholstery is Worn

Is your upholstery showing visible signs of wear? You might see fringed edges, worn-out seat covers, or materials damaged by pets or children (or careless adults). You may also have stains or odors that you can’t seem to eliminate.

Little kids full of energy, excitable pets and heavy daily use will eventually wear out any fabric. You may be able to mend some frayed edges or ripped seams easily, but over time, this kind of wear will become unsightly and unfixable.

Is it worth recovering a sofa? In some cases, you may be able to recover your sofa cushions or, if necessary, the entire sofa. However, upholstery materials are expensive — not to mention the cost of labor. Unless you are very capable with DIY projects, recovering couches is usually as expensive as buying new furniture (and, in some cases, even more pricey).

Your Sofa No Longer Provides Support

When couches lose their support, it’s time to replace them. Have you noticed that your couch cushions feel flat, sink in, or no longer provide good lumbar support? If so, you should consider making a change.

Sometimes, you can pad flat cushions with pillow inserts or foam pieces. You may also be able to add a length of plywood cut to fit the sofa under the cushions to boost support. However, these are temporary solutions. Not only can sitting on an uncomfortable sofa lead to back pain, but it can also be painful to rise from flat or sinking cushions. You can avoid these issues by choosing a new couch as soon as possible.

Your Space Has Changed

If you have moved into a new house or apartment, you’ll need to determine whether your old sofa will fit in your new space. Perhaps you still have the first couch that you bought after college for a rented apartment, and now, it seems tiny in the larger family room of your new house. Maybe you are an empty nester downsizing from a big family home to a smaller space, and your old couch doesn’t quite fit, in which case a love seat might be a better choice. Regardless of the reason for the change, some new furniture is in order.

It’s critical that your couch fits your space for a few different reasons. First, the room’s aesthetic will be much more visually pleasing if the proportions are right. Second, furniture that’s too large can take up too much of your floor space unnecessarily. Finally, if your sofa is too large for the room that it is in, it might get in the way of walking paths and interfere with the natural flow of traffic.

Your Tastes Have Changed

One more reason why you might find yourself in the market for a new couch is that your tastes have changed. That floral print you loved so much a few years ago may have gradually started to look outdated. Perhaps you once favored a sleek, modern look but now wish to go in a more country-chic direction.

Your tastes understandably tend to evolve over time. Even if you prefer an eclectic style of decorating, you’ll eventually need new pieces to replace old or worn items or to spruce up the room. A new sofa is a wonderful way to give any space a boost.
